A lighting device 1 adapted to enhance the visibility of objects comprising fluorescent materials to the human eye in scotopic and mesopic lighting conditions comprising a first light source 7 emitting light at blue or ultra-violet wavelengths, and a second light source 9 emitting white light, the light sources emitting light simultaneously or sequentially. The first light source may be an LED emitting light at 315nm to 525nm or 450nm to 480nm, or emit light in a broad bandwidth with a 315nm to 525nm filter. The second light source may be a white LED emitting light at 400nm to 700nm, or be a halogen bulb or gas discharge tube. The device may comprise a housing 2 containing the light sources, and a mounting device 8 coupled to the housing for mounting the housing on a support pole. The mounting device may include clamps, screw, bolts, caps, buts and bolts, jubilee clips, or ratchet and strap arrangements. The device enables enhanced visibility of fluorescent and/or retroreflective objects in low-light or night conditions. The device may be used as street lighting, on towers for road or rail work, at pedestrian crossings, on vehicles, trains, bicycles, or on high-visibility garments or helmets.

CLAIMS x. Lighting device adapted to enhance the visibility of object comprising fluorescent materials to the human eye in scotopic and mesopic lighting conditions, comprising: a first light source adapted to emit light at a wavelength in the blue and/or ultra- violet portion of the electromagnetic spectrum; and a second light source adapted to emit white light; wherein, in use, the first and second light sources are adapted to emit light to il- luminate an object comprising fluorescent materials simultaneously or sequentially. 2. Lighting device as claimed in claim 1, wherein the first light source emits light at a wavelength in the range 315nm to 525nm. 3. Lighting device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the first light source comprises one or more light emitting diodes emitting light at a wavelength in the range 315nm to 525nm. 4. Lighting device as claimed in claim 3, wherein the first light source comprises one or more light emitting diodes emitting light at a wavelength in the range 450nm to 480nm. 5. Lighting device as claimed in claim 1 or 2, wherein the first light source comprises a light source emitting light in a broad bandwidth and a filter adapted to filter wave- lengths in the range 315nm to 525nm. 6. Lighting device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the light emitted by the first light source causes the illuminated objects to fluoresce. 7. Lighting device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the second light source comprises at least one white light emitting diode that emits light in the wavelength range 400 to 700nm. 8. Lighting device as claimed in claim 7, wherein the second light source is halogen bulb or gas discharge tube. 9. Lighting device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the light emitted by the second light source causes the illuminated object to retroreflect. 10. Lighting device as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising: a housing adapted to contain the first and second light sources; and a mounting device coupled to the housing and adapted to mount the housing on a support. 11. Lighting device as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the light emitted by the second light source generates background illumination to the fluorescent material.
