An apparatus for additively manufacturing a composite component includes a Substrate 58 onto which the composite component 62 is formed; first frame assembly disposed above the substrate and at least one machine head 227 moveably coupled to the first frame assembly. The machine head(s) includes a deposition device for depositing a composite material onto the substrate to form the composite component layer by layer and an enclosure 238 which includes a top cover 242 defining at least one opening 244 and at least one side wall 248. The deposition device extends through the opening(s) of the top cover and is movable independent of the top cover along one or more first axes 256. The top cover may be movable with respect to the frame assembly; wherein the top cover and the deposition device(s) can be moved with respect to at leas one side wall. A method of additively manufacturing a component comprises positioning an enclosure comprising a top cover defining at least one opening; placing a deposition device through the at least one opening and depositing a composite material onto the substrate wherein the deposition device is movable independent of the top cover along one or more fixed axes. A heating source may be provided.
