A building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) for a mechanical construction, the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) comprising a first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) being printed via an additive manufacturing process, wherein the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) comprises a framework of a second material (125, 155, 175, 265, 365, 377) different from the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) and at least partially embedded in the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660).

The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to claims 1 or 2, wherein the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) comprise one or more hollow structures (157, 257, 375), the framework of the second material (125, 155, 175, 265, 365, 377) being included in some or all of the one or more hollow structures (157, 257, 375) inside the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660).

The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the framework of the second material (125, 175, 355) comprises a pre-fabricated framework (125, 175, 355) embedded at least partially inside the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660).
4. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the claims 2 or 3, wherein the framework of the second material (125, 175, 355) at least partially constitutes a wall of the one or more hollow structures (157, 257, 375).
S. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the second material (265, 365, 377) is second printed material (265, 365, 377) different from the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660).
6. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the framework constitutes a two-dimensional or
three-dimensional skeleton (365) for the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) at least partially embedded in the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660).
7: The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the framework or the framework together with the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) is configured and constructed to bear a predefined load applied, in use, to a predefined area of an outer wall of the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390).
8. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to claim 7, wherein the predefined area (207, 209) of the outer wall of the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) comprises an oleophilic property.

The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to claim 8, wherein the oleophilic property of the predefined area (207, 209) of the outer wall is generated using a predefined surface structure at the predefined area (207, 209), and/or using a third material applied to the predefined area (207, 209).
10. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to claim 9, wherein the surface structure is generated using the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) or using the third material.
Tis The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) comprise a functionally graded interface layer at one of the interfaces between one of the materials in the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) and a further material in the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390), a composition of the functionally graded interface layer is configured to gradually change from the one material via a mixture of the one material (110, 210, 310) and the further material (120, 220, 320) to the further material (120, 220, 320).
12. The building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims, wherein the first printed material (120, 150, 170, 250, 350, 360, 460, 560, 660) and/or the second printed material (265, 365, 377) is chosen
from a list comprising any other family of materials (metallic, ionic, ceramics, polymers/elastomers, both crystalline or amorphous in structure)
13. A bearing (200, 300) comprising the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the previous claims.
14. An actuator system (700) comprising the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the claims 1 to 12.
15. A gear box (800) comprising the building block (100, 140, 160, 205, 280, 290, 305, 380, 390) according to any of the claims 1 to 12.
