CLAIMS
1. A device for applying a cosmetic composition to an integument, comprising an applicator element comprising two or more surfaces having different surface properties, wherein at least one surface is a transfer surface adapted to hold a charge of said cosmetic composition and transfer it to said integument, and at least one surface is a repellent surface adapted to minimize interaction of said composition with said repellent surface.
2. The device according to claim 1, wherein said composition is aqueous.
3. The device according to claim 1, wherein said composition is non-aqueous.
4. The device according to claim 3, wherein said composition is oily.
5. The device according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein said transfer surface is hydrophilic and said repellant surface is hydrophobic.
6. The device according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein said transfer surface is hydrophobic and said repellant surface is hydrophilic.
7. The device according to any one of claims 1-6, wherein said transfer surface has a contact angle with water of less than 75° ( e.g ., less than 70°, less than 65°, less than 60°, etc.) and said repellent surface has a contact angle with water of greater than 80° (e.g., greater than 100°, greater than 110°, greater than 120°, etc.).
8. The device according to any one of claims 1-7, wherein the difference in contact angles with water between the repellent surfaces and the transfer surface is greater than 10° (e.g., greater than 20°, greater than 30°, greater than 40°, greater than 50°, etc.).
9. A device (e.g., an applicator, brush, etc.) for manipulating (e.g., moving, styling, orienting, applying, removing, cleaning, etc.) a composition (e.g., a cosmetic composition such as mascara or nail polish) on a surface, wherein said device comprises one or more repellent surfaces adapted to minimize the interaction of said composition with said repellent surface.
10. The device according to claim 9, wherein said composition is aqueous.
11. The device according to claim 9, wherein said composition is non-aqueous (e.g., oil based such as silicone oil based).
12. The device according to any one of claims 9-11, wherein said transfer surface is hydrophilic and said repellant surface is hydrophobic.
13. The device according to any one of claims 9-11, wherein said transfer surface is hydrophobic and said repellant surface is hydrophilic.
14. The device according to any one of claims 9-13 , wherein said transfer surface has a contact angle with water of less than 75° (e.g., less than 70°, less than 65°, less than 60°, etc.) and said repellent surface has a contact angle with water of greater than 80° (e.g., greater than 100°, greater than 110°, greater than 120°, etc.).
15. The device according to any one of claims 1-14, wherein the difference in contact angles with water between the repellent surfaces and the transfer surface is greater than 10° (e.g., greater than 20°, greater than 30°, greater than 40°, greater than 50°, etc.).
16. The device according to any one of claims 9-15, wherein said manipulation element comprises a plurality of bristles, wherein at least one of said plurality of bristles is at least partially composed of said repellent surface.
17. The device according to any one of claims 9-16, wherein said device is an applicator for applying a composition to a surface.
18. The applicator according to claim 17, wherein said composition is a cosmetic composition and said manipulation element comprises two or more surfaces having different surface properties, wherein at least one surface is a transfer surface capable of holding a charge of said cosmetic composition and transferring said charge to an integument and least one other surface is a repellent surface adapted to minimize interaction of cosmetic composition with said repellent surface.
19. The applicator according to any one of claims 17-18, wherein at least one of said repellent surfaces is surface coated with a hydrophobic, oleophobic, and/or omniphobic compound.
20. The applicator according to any one of claims 17-18, wherein at least one of said repellent surfaces is roughened and comprises a liquid overlayer.
21. The applicator according any one of claims 17-18, wherein at least one of said repellent surfaces comprises nano and/or microstructure pattern.
22. The applicator according any one of claims 17-21, wherein said cosmetic composition is mascara, lipstick, lip gloss, eyeliner, eyebrow composition, or nail polish.
23. The applicator according to any one of claims 9-22, wherein said applicator comprises a handle, an application portion, and optionally a stem, wherein the surface of said stem and/or said application portion comprises said one or more repellent surfaces.
24. The applicator according to claim 23, wherein said applicator is a twisted wire brush, a molded brush, or a 3D printed brush.
25. The applicator according to claim 23 or 24, wherein said application portion comprises a brush having one or more transfer elements capable of transferring a charged composition (e.g., a cosmetic composition) to a keratinous surface (e.g., lips, hair, skin, eyelid, nails, etc.).
26. The applicator according to claim 25, wherein said one or more transfer elements are selected from bristles, fibers, projections, indentations, fins, tines, velcro, teeth, grooves, sponge, foam, flocked surfaces, and combinations thereof.
27. The applicator according to any one of claims 25-26, wherein the surface of said transfer element comprises said one or more repellent surfaces.
28. The applicator according to claim 25, wherein said transfer elements comprise bristles extending from said stem and the surface of said bristle (e.g., the bristle tips, the entirety of the bristle, a substantial majority of the bristle, etc.) comprises said one or more repellent surfaces.
29. The applicator according to claims 23-28, wherein said applicator comprises a major longitudinal axis, wherein said application portion and said handle are disposed along said axis and at opposite ends of said applicator.
30. The applicator according to claim 29, wherein the surface of the application portion furthest from said handle comprises said one or more repellent surfaces configured to allow only the cosmetic product charged on said transfer surfaces to be removed from a reservoir of said cosmetic composition upon removal from said reservoir.
31. The applicator according to any one of claims 9-30, wherein said application portion further comprises one or more accessories and the surface of said one or more accessories comprises a repellent surface.
32. The applicator according to claim 31, wherein the substantial majority (e.g., more than 70% or more than 80% or more than 90% by surface area, etc.) surface of at least one of said one or more accessories is a repellent surface.
33. The applicator according to claim 31 or 32, wherein said one or more accessories are selected from a brush, comb, a bead, a sleeve, knife, wedge, a nail art tool, a sponge, tweezers a nail stamping plate, a lash curler, or combinations thereof.
34. The applicator according to any one of claims 23-33, wherein the surface of said stem comprises one or more repellent surfaces.
35. The applicator according to any one of claims 9-34, wherein said applicator is a cosmetic applicator.
36. The applicator according to any one of claims 9, 19-21, and 23-34, wherein said applicator is a medical device (e.g., a medical brush, etc.).
37. An applicator for a cosmetic composition comprising a repellent surface adapted to repel said cosmetic composition comprising a nano and/or microstructure pattern and/or a liquid overlayer.
38. The applicator according to claim 37, wherein said applicator comprises two or more surfaces having different surface properties, wherein at least one surface is a transfer surface capable of holding a charge of said cosmetic composition and transferring said charged cosmetic composition to a keratinous surface, and wherein at least one other surface is said repellent surface.
39. The applicator according to any one of claims 9-38, wherein said applicator comprises one or more reservoirs internally located on said applicator (e.g., in the handle and/or the stem, etc.),
wherein said reservoir is in fluid communication with said transfer element,
wherein said reservoir is configured to comprise a composition,
wherein said applicator is configured to transfer said composition to said transfer element.
40. The applicator according to claim 39, wherein said applicator comprises a channel connecting said reservoir and said transfer elements.
41. The applicator according to claim 40, wherein the surface of said reservoir and/or channel comprises one or more repellent surfaces.
42. An applicator for manipulating (e.g., moving, styling, orienting, applying, removing, cleaning, etc.) a composition on a surface comprising a plurality of bristles wherein a portion (e.g., a majority, a substantial majority, the entire, etc.) surface of one or more bristle is a
repellent surface adapted to repel said composition or adapted to have reduced adhesion to said composition,
wherein said composition is aqueous or oil (e.g., silicone oil based), and
wherein said applicator is a medical brush or an eyelash separator brush.
43. An applicator for manipulating (e.g., moving, styling, orienting, applying, removing, cleaning, etc.) a composition on a surface comprising a handle, a stem, and an application portion oriented along the major longitudinal axis of said applicator;
one or more repellent surfaces adapted to repel said composition or adapted to have reduced adhesion to said composition, wherein said composition is aqueous or non-aqueous (e.g., silicone oil based);
wherein the surface of the application portion furthest from said handle comprises said one or more repellent surfaces configured to allow only the cosmetic product charged on said transfer surfaces to be removed from a reservoir of said cosmetic composition upon removal from said reservoir.
44. An applicator for applying mascara to a keratinous surface, wherein said applicator comprises a handle, a stem, and an application portion oriented along the major longitudinal axis of said applicator, and
said application portion comprises a contiguous or noncontiguous transfer surface capable of holding a charge of said mascara and transferring said charged mascara to a keratinous surface, said applicator comprises a major longitudinal axis with said application portion and a handle disposed at the opposite end of said applicator.
45. A method of applying a cosmetic composition to a surface selected from a keratinous surface or a surface designed to mimic a keratinous surface (e.g., a fake synthetic nail surface, synthetic eyelashes, etc.) comprising charging a cosmetic composition on the applicator according to any one of claims 1-44, and contacting said charged product with said surface.
46. The method according to claim 45, wherein said keratinous surface is the surface of hair, a lip, or a nail.
47. The method according to claim 46, wherein said keratinous surface is two or more eyelashes.
48. The method according to claim 47, further comprising separating said two or more eyelashes with a portion of said repellent surface.
49. A kit comprising:
a) the applicator according to any one of claims 1-44,
b) a container comprising a reservoir charged with said cosmetic composition configured to receive said application portion such that said application portion is brought into contact with said cosmetic composition, and
c) a wiper for removing excess cosmetic composition from said applicator upon removal of said applicator from said container.
50. The kit according to claim 49, wherein said wiper is attached to said container.
51. The kit according to claim 49, wherein said wiper comprises one or more repellent surfaces capable of repelling said cosmetic composition.
52. The kit according to any one of claims 49-51, wherein the surface of said reservoir in fluid contact with said cosmetic composition comprises one or more repellent surfaces.
