The articles are generally formed, in whole or in part, using rapid manufacturing techniques, such as laser sintering, stereolithography, solid deposition modeling, and the like. The use of rapid manufacturing allows for relatively economical and time efficient manufacture of customized articles. Portions of the articles may be manufactured using rapid manufacturing and those portions may be joined with portions formed using conventional, non-rapid manufacturing techniques. The methods may also include performing a scan of an appropriate body part of a user, such as a foot, in order to create a customized article of footwear for the user.

1. A method of manufacturing an article of footwear (100), comprising: forming an upper (102) of the article of footwear by fusing bonding particles of thermoplastic elastomer material together using a rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique; and processing the upper formed by the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique by exposing the upper to an infiltrate to strengthen the upper, wherein the infiltrate has a hardness in the range of 20-70 Shore A.
2. A method according to claim 1, wherein the infiltrate includes a pigment or a dye.
3. A method according to claim 1, wherein the processing step further includes applying a coating to the upper to provide additional durability, wear resistance, or abrasion resistance to the upper (102).
4. A method according to claim 1, wherein in the processing step the infiltrate is a first infiltrate material having a first hardness, and wherein the method further comprises: forming a sole structure (104) using a rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique; and exposing the sole structure to a second infiltrate material having a second hardness that is greater than the first hardness.
5. A method according to claim 1, wherein the processing step includes exposing the upper (102) to the infiltrate under a pressure condition selected to force infiltrate material of the infiltrate into spaces of the upper.
6. A method according to claim 1, wherein the infiltrate is a urethane resin.
7. A method according to any one of the preceding claims, wherein the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique includes stereolithography.
8. A method according to any one of claims 1 through 6, wherein the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique includes solid deposition modeling.
9. A method according to any one of claims 1 through 6, wherein the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique includes laser sintering.
