The articles are generally formed, in whole or in part, using rapid manufacturing techniques, such as laser sintering, stereolithography, solid deposition modeling, and the like. The use of rapid manufacturing allows for relatively economical and time efficient manufacture of customized articles. Portions of the articles may be manufactured using rapid manufacturing and those portions may be joined with portions formed using conventional, non-rapid manufacturing techniques. The methods may also include performing a scan of an appropriate body part of a user, such as a foot, in order to create a customized article of footwear for the user.

1. A method of manufacturing an article of footwear (100), comprising: forming an upper portion (102); forming a sole structure (104) including: a midsole impact force attenuation system formed in a rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique, wherein the midsole impact force attenuation system is contained in a housing (502) and wherein the midsole impact force attenuation system includes a plurality of interlocking links (504); and engaging the sole structure with the upper portion such that the housing is positioned to support a foot of a wearer of the article of footwear. 2. The method according to claim 1, wherein the step of forming the upper portion (102) includes forming the upper portion by fusing thermoplastic elastomer material together using a rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique. 3. The method according to claim 1, wherein the upper portion (102) is formed from at least one of leather, nylon, and cotton. 4. The method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique for forming at least one of the midsole impact force attenuation system and the upper portion (102) is one of laser sintering, solid deposition modeling, and stereo lithography. 5. The method according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the step of forming the sole structure (104) further includes forming an outsole (506) as a portion of the sole structure using the rapid manufacturing additive fabrication technique. 6. The method according to claim 1 or claim 2, further comprising: engaging an outsole (506) with the housing (502). 7. The method according to any one of claims 1-4, wherein the housing (502) includes an outsole (506). 8. The method according to claim 7, wherein the outsole (506) is integrally formed with the housing (502).
